fitzroy150px.jpgThe Whales are on their way through and the cooler water has moved into the Moreton Bay.
Boaties have picked the good weather days and headed wide with good mixed catches of Snapper, Pearl Perch and Parrot, with most filling their bag limit at the 29's and 35's. Some quality sizes have also been had on Harry Atkinsons and the West Peel artificial. The larger Snapper will move into the shallower waters within the bay coming into spring.

Tailor are also throughout the bay, float out a Pilchard on a set of gangs whilst looking for Winter Whiting at the sand hills. A very welcome bycatch and one the best eating fillets when fresh.

For those lucky enough to be heading north, The Bunker Group has been productive during the good weather periods, the grounds east from Musgrave to Fitzroy have produced some nice Reds and a good mixed bag of Reefies.

Thinking of heading north and need some advice?
Drop into the office and say hello, we are all to happy to share our experiences cruising.

             Brisbane River Fire

Spectator Vessels on the
Brisbane River

In the interest of safety and in accordance with  Queensland Fireworks, the Brisbane River will be closed between Mowbray Park, East Brisbane and Go Between Bridge, Milton from 5pm until 8.45pm.

Two dedicated spectator mooring zones will be established in the Town Reach of the Brisbane River for 100 recreational vessels who obtained Entry Permit Flags on Wed 17 Aug. Only those vessels with the Entry Permit Flags are permitted to anchor in these mooring zones.

All spectator vessels attending must be registered for an Aquatic Flag in order to gain entry to the dedicated spectator mooring zones.

Recreational boat owners wishing to obtain entry permit flags must make application in person at the Sunsuper Riverfire Aquatic Flag Outlet in South Banks Piazza on Wednesday 17 August between 8:30am and 9:30am.

Recreational boat owners must complete the permit application form and present this at the outlet along with their Queensland Transport vessel registration notice.

      Disposal of EPIRBS and Flares

Redland Bay
Coast Guard

We are often asked what we do with your old out of date EPIRBS and Flares.

Coast Guard at Redland Bay will assist boat owners with disposing of their old beacons. Have an old beacon?, bring it down to the crew at Redland Bay and they will make sure they are disposed of properly at no cost.

After disposing of your unwanted beacon please advise the Australia Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) by updating your online registration account or by phoning 1800 406 406.

      Know Your Tender Rules?

Tender Registration

Dont be Caught out! as a number of people have been fined for non registered tenders whilst angling or being further than 2nm from the mothership.

If your boat or PWC is a tender to a registered recreational ship, it is exempt from registration if:

  • it is only used within 2 nautical miles of the parent ship
  • it is being used to transport people or provisions between the ship and the shore—this does not include angling or sight seeing activities.

The tender must be marked on the exterior with the word 'tender' and the parent ship’s registration numbers, in characters at least 75mm high. If this is not possible, markings should be on the inside of the boat in the largest characters possible. If the tender is used for more than 1 ship, it may be marked with the owner's name.

      The Whales Are Here!

Whale Watching
Looking to get out in the bay and see some of the largest and majestic animals on earth.
We often see the mothers and their calves come inside Moreton Bay, down to behind Peel, starting from August though to November.
large numbers are currently on the move outside the Bay and can been seen quite easily on calm days in open waters.

The key to watching such a large animal is to give it the space it needs to behave naturally. This means the best whale watching experience is when the watcher becomes more like a part of the scenery, giving the whale the space to behave as it likes—and maybe swimming closer to you.

Legal approach distances have been established to ensure whales are not harassed. This gives whale watchers the best view to see a whale naturally and allows the whales to continue on their long migration undisturbed.
